Jeden z najnowszych wywiadów:
XLSemanal. In his new songs there are references to economy: The kingdom of gold, the high priest of the money...
Mark Knopfler. Yes, maybe its more on this record. The high priest of money is based on a character that I already had on mind
XL. Any names?
M.K. It would be someone that works for the government now but he used to work for banks before. You know what kind of guy I´m talking about.
XL. What we should do with them?
M.K. Regulations! Don´t let them do what they want. Desregulation started with Reagan and Thatcher and looks where they took us. But who cares about what I think, anyway! Now everybody knows about economy. However, that high priest is an unusual character in my repertoire, I dont use to write about rich people. I always write about working class people, normal people.
XL. Your father was an hungarian jewish running away from Nazis...
M.K. He was a socialist, and a refugee. It synthetizes our era in some way. Obviously he abandoned the extreme positions as time went by, but when younger he was more idealist. I always had that influence. But I´m not socialist.
XL. How would you define yourself about it?
M.K. Normally, if there is any political party, I´m agains it [laughing].
XL. You´ve been asked many times, but, did you decide to disband Dire Straits because it was turning too big to survive?
M.K. Yes, it wasnt because it was big, but hugh! That was a big reason of my decision. Besides, I was exhausted, I couldnt stay longer. I need time to turn around and rest. I had a good time with Dire Straits. I loved it and it was an acomplished dream but it was the only clever exit.
XL. No tentation of coming back?
M.K. Not at all. Now, for example, when touring, I always avoid school holydays, so I can be at home with the family. I try to have a normal life as long as I can.
XL. Do you feel you owe that to your children?
M.K. Yes, no doubt. They are growing uo and I try to be with them, and I try to avoid mistakes.
XL. Avoid them?
M.K. Well, tours used to be a run away for me. But you can´t run away, the problem will be there when you come back, maybe it gets bigger! But its not only that but also stay fit Pero no es solo eso. I didnt smoke in 15 years. You feel stronger, better. You have to rescue yourself.
XL. You also do sports.
M.K. Yes, I go to the gym, play tennis... Its important. If I´m in a city I go out for a walk. I like to discover the cities I visit. When I travel to Spain I try to visit it. I feel connected to Spain. If I´m in Bilbai I dont feel the same that when in Barcelona or Madrid, and enjoy that differences is important. Differece rules! (he says it in spanish) ¡Viva la diferencia!
XL. Anyway, you dont have a past with drugs abuse, You are not a Keith Richards...
M.K. No. But I´m not a saint neither. I´d be a bad saint and a bad judge. And I´ll be a terrible guitar teacher. I´m bad at that three thingsY sería un profesor de guitarra horroroso. I think I found what better fits to me, writting songs.
XL. There is a beer brewery near your studio, but I´ve heard you like Rioja's wine...
M.K. It drives me mad! Rioja's wine, but Ribera de Duero [pronuncied with an strong accent] as well. I love spanish wine. If I´m lucky some friends will come with a bottle of it. I also love to play in Spain. And it was an honour to have Vicente Amigo in my studio. It was amazing.
XL. Are you going flamenco?
M.K. No, no. I never could do that, you have to do something like this [he moves his fingers fast, like a flamenco guitarist]. But I play with my hand in the pickguard, impossible!
XL. I read you drink Tea at the stage...
M.K. Thats what people thinks of me? [laughing]. Let them believe that! But between me and you, that doesnt happens too often.
XL. However, looks like you dont follow the spam, drugs and rock and roll model.
M.K. Well, when you have this age, you think more about going to the gym and survive. This is basicly what I try to do. Write songs, and at the road as well. A tour is like surviving. In the end you learn how to do it, you learn to survive, and thats something me and my friends would have to write a book about!
XL. Last question, are you bored about Dire Straits come back questions?
M.K. Yes, its boring. Even I understand the interest, its nothing I´d think about.
