Well, we're sitting in British Grove Studios in Chiswick in London. And this is the place where I feel privileged to come to work when I do... when I've got something to record. I've built it over a number of years and I'm very proud of the place. It's a wonderful place to come to work. But I only... I don't come in here to write the music, I only come in here to record it. This is where I recorded this album Tracker, which is just about to be... to come staggering into the light.
Znajdujemy się w studiu British Grove w Chiswick w Londynie. To jest miejsce, w którym mam szczęście pracować rejestrując materiał. Tworzyłem je przez wiele lat i jestem z niego bardzo dumny. To jest cudowne miejsce do pracy. Ale nie piszę tutaj muzyki, przychodzę tu jedynie, aby ją nagrać. W nim właśnie nagrany został album Tracker, który to wkrótce ma ujrzeć światło dzienne.

There's one that reminds me of a Dire Straits' sound and that's the song Beryl, which is about Beryl Bainbridge. 'Cause she was such an exceptional woman, an exceptional writer in my view. And what's quite interesting about this Booker thing, I was fascinated by the fact that she never won all these years, being put forward every single time. And I went through the... I went on the Booker site and I started looking at all the judges, just out of interest, and seeing what their qualifications were, if, you know, presuming that they were qualified as much as you can be for something to do with the arts. And I've noticed an hu[ge]... enormous amount of them were educated at Oxford and Beryl is a... was a working class Liverpool girl who didn't go to university. And it's just... I'm just gonna leave it there.
Jest jeden utwór przypominający brzmieniem Dire Straits, piosenka Beryl poświęcona Beryl Bainbridge. W moim odczuciu Beryl była wyjątkową kobietą i pisarką. Fascynujące w związku z nagrodą Bookera, jest fakt, że przez te wszystkie lata Beryl pomimo ciągłych nominacji nigdy nie wygrała. Wszedłem sobie na stronę nagrody Bookera i zacząłem sprawdzać, tak z czystej ciekawości, kim są członkowie jury i jakie posiadają kwalifikacje, zakładając, że posiadają najlepsze na ile to możliwe w przypadku oceniania sztuki. I zauważyłem, że znakomita większość z nich jest absolwentami Oxfordu. A Beryl jest... była dziewczyną z klasy robotniczej Liverpoolu i nie skończyła żadnego uniwersytetu. I to... więcej chyba nie muszę dodawać.

It's a nice cycle that I live in a terms of having fun, because I'm lucky in the sense that... if there is a cycle of events where you write a song, you record it self and then you go and play it to people. If you enjoy the whole cycle, then it makes you a pretty lucky guy. Cause not everybody enjoys the whole deal.
Żyję w przyjemnym cyklu, który sprawia mi radość, jeśli ciąg zdarzeń, tj. pisanie posienki, nagrywanie a potem ruszanie z nią do ludzi, można tak określić. Nie każdemu cały ten proces musi się podobać. Więc jeśli tobie sprawia przyjemność, to czujesz się szczęściarzem.
Life gets pretty full when you're enjoying what you're doing. And then unexpected things will happen as well. And if you have tours planned and then unexpected things happen, you have to fit them in between. In my case there were a couple of Bob Dylan's tours that, you know, Bob came in and I was asking about whether we could do. And so I did a European tour with Bob and then American touring. And they were added to tours that were on the board already to do. The tours with Bob Dylan... I hadn't expected to turn up as it did. So that changed the recording schedule and probably changed the album too when I eventually got back into the studio. I'm glad that all of that happened, because, I think, that that will have informed some of the stuff on Tracker too.
Życie staje się wypełnione, jeśli to co robisz sprawia ci radość. A przecież pojawiają się nieoczekiwane zdarzenia. Jeśli masz zaplanowaną trasę i właśnie coś nieoczekiwanego się wydarzy, musisz to jakoś gdzieś wcisnąć. W moim przypadku była to trasa z Bobem Dylanem, kiedy przyszedł i musiałem sprawdzić, czy w ogóle damy radę. I udało się z Bobem pojechać w trasę po Europie, a potem jeszcze po Stanach. Po prostu dodaliśmy występy, do tych które były już na rozkładzie. Co do grania z Bobem Dylanem... nie spodziewałem się, że wyjdzie, tak jak wyszło. Więc musieliśmy zmienić grafik nagrań, ale także i samą płytę po powrocie do studia. Ciesze się, że to wszystko się wydarzyło, bo pomogło również uformować materiał na Trackera.
I'm very much into touring. Having this little ship together is a big deal, it's a big fun thing for me and I feel very at home. It's not something that I endure, it's something I enjoy very much. Getting out onto the road with, again, with some of these songs and seeing what it does to people, that's part of the joy of it. Particularly nice to see the big tough guys crying. And I always think that's funny when you get a big tough guy... maybe his family brought him or somebody brought him and his got his arms folded and it's, you know, see "wow, this is about them", and at the end they're all doing that [clapping] and you only see tears coming down. It's good, it's a good feeling. The thing is if you've energized somebody, you've been positive or you've sensitized somebody and you've made a difference, you know. It's a creative act. You've dropped it in the well and the ripples go out and you never know what's gonna come back.
Uwielbiam wyruszać w trasę, prowadzić tę naszą wspólną łajbę. To jest ogromna frajda, czuję się w tym jak ryba w wodzie. To nie jest coś, co muszę znosić; wręcz przeciwnie - bardzo, bardzo to lubię. Zabieranie części tych piosenek do ludzi, obserwowanie jak na nich działają, to jest czysta przyjemność. A szczególnie lubię płączących twardzieli. To jest zabawne, kiedy wielki twardziel... pewnie rodzina lub ktoś inny przyprowadził go na koncert, więc ma skrzyżowane ramiona i ten wyraz twarzy "robię to tylko dla nich"... a na końcu wszyscy już tylko robią tak [klaskanie] i widzisz jego łzy spływjące po policzkach. To takie satysfakcjonujące. Jeśli dodałeś komuś energii albo wydobyłeś jego wrażliwą stronę, to dokonałeś zmiany. To jest właśnie akt twórczy. To jak wrzucenie kamienia do studni, fale się rozchodząi do końca nie wiadomo jak do ciebie wrócą.
